Back to the shop

Yesterday I had my first ever shift as a volunteer in the bookshop on Parliament St. It was a pleasant afternoon, featuring nice chat with tourists, someone still looking for the Viking Museum despite the fact that I think it got rolled into Dublinia (must check this; people will ask me this every week from now till November), and a few young lads who tried halfheartedly to rob the till and get into the back room. Thanks to the managements' new (or since my time, anyway) security procedures, however, their efforts were fruitless. Take that, tossers (or rather don't).

Books bought: JPod by Douglas Coupland, which is kind of annoying and trying too hard, and Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra, which was recommended to me last summer by Queenie. Result.

JPod is now a tv show in Canada and is so irritating CSI Miami is the better alternative for that slot.

I downloaded the first few episodes and like some things about it (how it correctly has everyone in Vancouver growing pot and working in the cheesy movie industry). Not sure about it overall as the writing isn't consistently up to snuff but surely the BC contingent must love it.

Also, mrs monkey, why didn't you mention the thieving bastards last night?

I could imagine JPod being a bit "hilarious" in that way that old ladies growing pot is somehow hilarious (like old people rapping or swearing), but I've no great desire to see it, other than to see a show in which Vancouver gets to relax and be itself, rather than trying to pretend to be someone else.

Because they didn't actually thieve anything and were in no way scary. They came in, arsed about for two minutes, and were sent on their way. Although, in that great way that dodgy kids have, they never stopped moving the entire time they were in the shop.
